Using the Telephone
In order to use the phone in your room, you need to sign an agreement with the phone company. The Dormitory Administration will direct you to the office of the phone company. Additional information on using the phone can also be obtained from the dormitory administration.
Please bear in mind that Moscow has two area codes, 495 and 499. The university phone numbers beginning with 972, 973 and 978 are assigned to the 499 area code. The phone in your dorm is assigned to the 499 area code. There are other numbers in the city assigned to his area code. When asking or giving your phone number be sure to specify the area code.
Calling from the dormitory:
- If you want to call a phone number beginning with 972, 973, 978 or any other number assigned to the 499 area code you need to dial 499 and the number you are calling
- If you want to call any other number (any number which does not begin with 972, 973, 978) you need to dial 8 495 and then the number you are calling
To call the dormitory:
- If you are calling from a phone with the number beginning with 972, 973, 978 or any other number assigned to the 499 area code you need to dial 499 and then the number you are calling
- If you are calling from a phone assigned to the 495 area code you need to dial 8 499 and the number you are calling
Phone calls within Moscow are free of charge. Long distance and international long distance calls are to be paid for at the dormitory administration room (building 4, ground floor, room 10).
If your phone is out of order call 250-6330 or 250-6320.
For major savings on long distance and international long distance calls use phone cards which you can buy in shops and kiosks. Keep in mind that those phone cards require tone dialing mode. If your phone works in the pulse dialing mode you can use the operator. The operator’s phone number can be found on every calling card.
International Calls
To make an international telephone call dial “8”; when you hear the dial tone, dial “10,” then the country code, the area code and the number you are calling
