Lecture by Elizabeth Roudinesco “Freud in His Times and Ours”

The lecture by a famous French psychoanalysis researcher was delivered 12 December 2017 at which she also presented her book of the same title recently published in Russia. Dr. Roudinesco maintains that Dr. Freud continued the tradition of the Enlightenment and Romanticism. While the majority of European researchers focused on concrete facts and behavior, Dr. Freud turned to literature and mythology. In her presentation Dr. Roudinesco maintained that Freud had argued that the movement of the subconscious preceded that of the conscious yet she thought it was the other way around: the underlying rules that Freud had discovered were born out of tenets of society and political situation.

In conclusion Dr. Roudinesco expressed a hope that some day a history of psychoanalysis in Russia would be written, spanning the period from 1914 to the present. She also said that she would consider being a coordinator of such a project that had to be carried out in Russia lest it be taken up by foreign researchers.

General information: Dr. Elizabeth Roudinesco is a professor of history at Paris VII University. Her books have been translated into over 30 languages.
