Dr. Ershova, Head of the Knorozov Mesoamerican Center, became a honorary doctor of the University of San Carlos (Guatemala)
The ceremony took place 31 October 2017 in the Adolfo Mijango Lopez Hall of the University of San Carlos. The honorary degree has been bestowed on Dr. Ershova for her contribution to Mayan epigraphics.
The ceremony was opened by Dr. Carlos Camey, academic secretary of the University and continued by Dr. Marcio Palacios, Director of School of Political Sciences who both spoke about Dr. Ershova’s merits in the preservation of Guatemalan cultural heritage.
After the ceremony was over, Rector Carlos Alvarado concluded the proceedings by a speech in which he emphasized the importance of cooperation with Russian universities in general and RSUH in particular.
Dr. Ershova was a pupil of the great Yuri Knorozov who, in 1950s, had deciphered Mayan writing. Since 1999 she has headed the Mesoamerican Center, preserving the Knorozov legacy and furthering the Center’s research. In 2014 she received a medal of Yuri Knorozov, established by the state of Yucatan.
