INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE “TIME, ONWARD!” TO BE HELD IN MAY, 2020

Location: Herzen State Pedagogical University (korpus 5, enter from Kazanskaya Str.)

The period from the end of the 19th century to around 1939 was characterized by an unprecedented cultural surge. It is traditionally divided into Avant-Garde Copper Age (1910-1934), the Golden Decade (the 1920s) of Soviet philosophy, the Goldene Zwanziger period (1924-1929) in Germany and the Roaring Twenties period in the US, UK and France.

Many approaches and theories have been put forth to analyze the cultural situation of this period, concentrating specifically on the underlying philosophical aspect, thus making philosophy a liaison agent between separate art forms and movements.

This approach, coupled with the breakthrough in theories about the space-time continuum (Einstein’s relativity theory), sociology and psychoanalysis, led to a completely new perception of the idea of time.

This concept of “temporal shift”, the idea that the time is inseparable from its content, will be the main topic of the Conference. The goal of the event can be defined as an attempt to trace, on the material of Russian culture, the evolution of the perception of time in various aspects of life.

The conference will deal with topics on spacetime, relationship between man and time, relationship between time and timelessness, relationship between personal and social time, and others.

In the period in question, the following paradigms of perceptions of time can be identified:

  1. History as a tool to reinterpret the past in linguistics, literature, philosophy, art, etc.
  2. Nihilism vs. the “old culture”/”historicism”
  3. Sociologism, that considered the creative activity as a “time-forming natural factor”
  4. Subjectivistic time theories (phenomenology, existentialism)
